Tech talent: 2021’s new hiring hotspot

COVID 19 has changed our world in so many ways. In business for example it’s become the key catalyst for digital transformation as companies endeavour to maintain operations whilst also meeting stringent health and social isolation guidelines.

A recent Market Outlook study by Randstadt (1) observed that now even non-tech space companies such as retail, banking, and food & beverage are pivoting their business models from offline to online. The result? A dramatic growth in digital wallets, payment processors, and e-commerce platforms.

Across the board – and around the globe – businesses are striving to adopt new technologies to streamline operations and protect themselves and their staff and customers from pandemic harm.

Increasing Demand For Tech Experts and Developers

As a result, the Randstad study also noted that the rapid uptake of new technologies has significantly increased the demand for tech experts and developers, in particular job roles such as digital transformation specialists, data scientists, cloud architects, and cybersecurity experts.

In a new twist on the old rags to riches story, the 2020’s now promises to be a gold rush decade for tech – heads. According to Microsoft, by 2025 there will be 149 million new technology-oriented jobs globally across privacy and trust, cybersecurity, data analytics, and cloud and software development. (2)

Salary levels are already rising in the wake of this significant surge in demand. The Randstadt study states that currently the salary increment for tech talent looking to switch employers ranges between 8% and 12%; but due to the unfolding scarcity and strong demand for tech talent, some tech professionals could expect to receive a 20% to 30% salary increment if they switch employers in 2021.

Most in-demand Tech Roles

So, what are some of the most in-demand roles? According to  Robert Half Technology’s 2021 IT salary report these range across the board from data-focused to security-related positions. For example:

Security professionals (data, information, network, systems, cloud): Data, information, systems, network, and cloud security professionals are in demand more than ever as businesses increasingly rely on data for everyday business operations. These IT professionals ensure that enterprise IT initiatives remain safe from potential threats inside and outside the organization. They’re also tasked with keeping on top of industry compliance regulations and future security trends, and ensuring the business’s hardware, software, and networks remain secure.

Cloud architects: Oversee the company’s cloud computing strategy and are responsible for deploying, managing, and supporting cloud applications. Cloud architects typically have a strong understanding of multiple operating systems in addition to networking, programming, and security skills.

Database administrators: Responsible for maintaining the software used to manage a database and ensuring the data is easily accessible to those who need it. DBAs ensure that servers remain efficient and operational while overseeing data security, implementation, replication, backup, storage, access, and partitions.

In the aftermath of the COVID 19 pandemic, we are on the cusp of a new worldwide digital revolution and the decade of the 2020’s promises to be a memorable one in the technology recruitment sphere. In Asia and all over the world.
